A good example of an 1879 period Zulu regimental shield of the ihawu type. This was the smallest (and perhaps least common) of the regimental war-shields, although a number of examples exist which were looted from the royal homesteads after the battle of Ulundi (including one, currently in the Royal Engineers Museum, which was taken by John Chard from oNdini itself). Shield size is 32 x 18 ins), hide is in very good condition, although the handle on the back is damaged and the stick is not original. A number of shields in this colour pattern exist dating to the war, and it is one of the colours associated with the uKhandempemvu (uMcijo) regiment, which formed part of the Zulu centre at iSandlwana, and fought at both Khambula and Ulundi. A very striking display piece.
