Col. H.C. Lugg was the son of Trooper Harry Lugg of the Natal Mounted Police who fought at Rorke's Drift; H.C. Lugg himself was a Native Commissioner in Zululand in the early 20th century, and with his interest in historical matters set about tracing the area's historical sites. This is the first book which attempted to guide visitors to the sites, and it was informed by Lugg's family knowledge and by his association with elderly Zulus such as Maphelu kaMkhosana Zungu, who had fought in the war as a member of the iNgobamakhosi regiment. Col. Lugg was the first to identify the site of King Dingane's hitherto secret grave location, a story told in the book. There is still a lot of information in this book not easily found elsewhere. Whilst the book is in good condition the dust wrapper is very fragile and has several pieces missing.
