The John Chard Decoration and medal were instituted in 1952 to recognise service in the South African Citizen Force. Although the medal had no direct connection to the Anglo-Zulu War, it was named after Lieutenant John Chard RE, the senior British commander at Rorke’s Drift, and the image on the front of both represents Rorke’s Drift. The silver Decoration was awarded for twenty years’ service, and is numbered on the rim.
