Original CDV photo of Anthony William Durnford, RE. Durnford was a significant figure in the British colony of Natal in the 1870s, and was responsible for the unsuccessful attempt to capture inkosi Langalibalele of the amaHlubi people – who was attempting to flee over the Kahlamba mountains, away from the authority of Colonial Natal – in 1873. Durnford subsequently commanded No. 2 Column during the invasion of Zululand, and was the senior officer present at the battle of iSandlwana, where he was killed. His role during the battle, and his responsibility for the British defeat, remains the subject of considerable controversy. A good clear image in civilian dress.
