A large heavy 19th century Zulu iwisa (knobkerry). The ball is particularly large (4.5 ins diameter) and the whole piece is heavily weighted towards the head. Because such pieces would have been difficult to carry in the field and would have been difficult to use with the necessary dexterity, they are popularly known as 'executioners' knobkerries', because they are apparently designed to administer one swift fatal blow. This one is 22.50 ins long overall in excellent condition with a fine patina, one or two slight chips to head but no age cracks. A rare and impressive piece.
