Original Carte de Visite Photograph - John Chard VC

An original glossy Victorian portrait of John Rouse Merriott Chard, who was the senior officer commanding at the battle of Rorke’s Drift. Chard was awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry, and this photo was taken after his return to the UK when he was in much demand as a popular hero. It is a very sharp image of him in Royal Engineers uniform, his Victoria Cross prominently displayed. Bears the mark of Rolfe’s Photo Studio, Haymarket, London on the reverse. Dimensions are 4-inches x 2.5-inches.
