'A WIDOW-MAKING WAR; The Life and Death of a British Officer in Zululand, 1879', edited by Howard Whitehouse

Interesting small book on the life and death of Captain Warren Wynne, who was the senior Royal Engineer officer with Col. Pearson's No. 1 (Coastal) column. Wynne was responsible for two of the largest fortifications built by the British during the war, Forts Tenedos and Eshowe. He was present throughout the siege of Eshowe, and it was entirely down to him that Pearson's fortifications remained impregnable; sadly Wynne's exertions cost him his health, and he died shortly after the besieged column was relieved. This book is based on both his professional engineering diaries and letters to his wife, and so includes both technical and personal accounts of his experiences, including a significant role in the battle of Nyezane. Hardback, good condition; a scarce book these days.
