Photograph of General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien, dated to his Boer War service. He wears a black armband, carefully inked on afterwards, presumably in response to the death of Queen Victoria. As a young lieutenant Smith-Dorrien had famously survived the battle of iSandlwana. Mount 6 x 5 ins, good condition.
