Original Carte de Visite Photograph - Louis Napoleon, The Prince Imperial

An original CDV photograph of Prince Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, the Prince Imperial of France, who was killed in action in Zululand on 1 June 1879. The portrait is one of several taken of the Prince when her arrived in Durban in April 1879, and shows him wearing the Royal Artillery officers’ patrol jacket he wore throughout the war. The backing is from the Edinburgh photographer Marshall Wane, who clearly reproduced the photograph to cater for local interest in Scotland. There are one or two slight spots in the image but otherwise it remains a clear and poignant study of the Prince wearing the uniform in which he would soon be killed.
