A full-sized Zulu regimental war-shield, isihlangu, dating to the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. The pattern is that of the uMxapho ibutho (regiment) who were quartered at the kwaNodwengu royal homestead which was extensively looted by British troops after the battle of Ulundi on 4 July 1879. Large numbers of regimental war shields were taken by British soldiers as souvenirs on this occasion, including some in this pattern which were presented to Queen Victoria, and are housed in the Osborne House Swiss Cottage collection.

Most of the uMxapho fought at the battle of Nyezane on 22 January 1879, although some companies were present at iSandlwana. They were the principle unit involved in the skirmish on 3 July 1879 before Ulundi, in which Zulus commanded by Zibhebhu kaMapitha almost trapped British mounted troops commanded by Redvers Buller. They also took part in the battle of Ulundi the following day. This is an attractive example of a genuine 1879 war shield, in good condition, with no hair loss, but with some small old nail holes around the edges where it was once mounted. The size of the hide is 136 x 71 cms, whilst the stick is 140 cms long.

Original period war-shields are very distinctive and increasingly difficult to find - a rare and striking piece.
