Item Description: A very nice 19th century regimental war-shield, umbhumbhulozu, measuring 39 x 24 inches. Good condition for age, very little hair-loss, but some slight damage to the lacing supports on the reverse. The colour is one of those associated with the iNgobamakhosi ibutho, who fought at the battles of iSandlwana, Khambula and Ulundi. Many of the surviving examples of these shields were looted from the royal homesteads by the British after the battle of Ulundi on 4 July 1879.
