A light 19th century Xhosa throwing spear with slim shaft, lightly fluted blade, and typical binding. The Xhosa people were engaged in nine wars against the Dutch and British in the Eastern Cape area of southern Africa; this spear possibly dates to the last of them, the 9th War (1877-78). Good condition, overall length 58 inches, blade 6 inches.
