A stunning example of an original full-sized (isihlangu) regimental war shield dating to the 1879 war. Original period war-shields are very distinctive and increasingly difficult to find; like most examples this was probably looted from the shield stores in the royal homesteads of oNdini or kwaNodwengu after the battle of Ulundi on 4 July 1879. The dimensions are spectacular – 53 x 29 ins. Generally this example is in very good condition – little hair loss, some slight buckling of the hide commensurate with age, one section of the contrasting binding missing. With original stick.
