A nice example of a rare Zulu regimental war-shield, isihlangu, dating to the Anglo-Zulu War. Overall size is 48 x 25 ins in very good condition with some hair loss commensurate with age. Includes original stick; the stick has been damaged at the top, and a detached piece is held in place by the binding, otherwise sound condition overall. The colour suggests it is from the uKhandempemvu regiment who were prominent in all the major battles in 1879 including iSandlwana. The majority of surviving examples of this type of shield were looted by British troops from the royal homesteads around oNdini after the Battle of Ulundi. Original period war-shields are very distinctive and increasingly difficult to find - a rare and striking piece.
