Original CDV photo of Lt. Neville J.A. Coghill, 1/24th Regiment. Lieutenant Coghill was famously awarded the posthumous Victoria Cross for his attempt to save the life of fellow officer Lt. Teignmouth Melvill, during the retreat from iSandlwana; Melvill was attempting to save the Queen’s Colour of the 1/24th, but was unhorsed in the Mzinyathi river – Coghill returned to the water to rescue him, but both men were subsequently killed. Both were awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously. An excellent study of Coghill wearing his 24th uniform, and showing him wearing the beard he grew shortly before the campaign. Dimensions are 4-inches x 2.5-inches.
