Original CDV photo of Sir Charles Warren, RE. Warren enjoyed a varied career which included a spell excavating archaeological sites in Palestine and extensive service in southern Africa in the 1870s and ‘80s; he commanded the Diamonds Fields Horse during the 9th Cape Frontier and was wounded in action in the Perie Bush. In 1884 he commanded the expedition which occupied Bechuanaland on behalf of the British Government. In London he was Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police during the Jack the Ripper investigation. During the Anglo-Boer War he commanded a Division during the relief of Ladysmith, and played a significant role in the battle of Spion Kop. After he retired from the military he worked with Robert Baden-Powell in establishing the Boy Scout movement. A nice clear image in uniform. Dimensions are 4-inches x 2.5-inches.
