Pair of Xhosa throwing spear, one with the typical Xhosa elongated and fluted blade and neat binding. The other is considerably more rare with single-piece iron spike-type blade. The Xhosa fought nine wars against Dutch and British expansion on the Eastern Cape Frontier, the last, in 1877-78, being a testing-ground for British troops who went on to fight in Zululand the following year. Because the 'Cape Frontier Wars' achieved less public notoriety in the contemporary British press, Xhosa weapons are scarce nowadays. First spear blade 5.5 ins (tip is missing), overall length 62 ins and the second spear blade is 10.5 inches and overall length 62.5 inches. A very nice pair and study of two different Xhosa throwing spears.
