The northern sector during the Anglo-Zulu War had a character all of its own where the greater military rivalries overlapped complex pre-existing tensions. In this dense and academic work Huw Jones considers the rivalries between the British, Boer, Zulu and Swazi occupants of the disputed territory around the settlement of Utrecht which shaped the war there. There is much here on the abaQulusi and the de-stabilising presence of the exiled Swazi Prince Mbilini, and the book culminates in a detailed and carefully balanced account of the battle of Hlobane. Hardback, maps, 379 pages, a few slight marks to the dust wrappers and page edges, otherwise as new.
