This original hand-coloured engraving from The Graphic illustrates the naval brigade landed from HMS Active at the Lower Thukela Drift in December 1878, during the tense days leading up to the Anglo-Zulu War. Depicted here is the ceremonial deployment of British naval and marine forces at the moment the British ultimatum was issued to King Cetshwayo—an ultimatum that, when rejected, triggered the invasion of Zululand.
Prominently featured are two full ranks of Royal Navy sailors in blue jumpers and white caps, interspersed with red-tunic Royal Marines wearing white sun helmets. The brigade is drawn up in formation around two field guns, projecting a calculated show of imperial might on the river frontier. Notably, African sailors are depicted among the British ranks, a detail rarely emphasized in period imagery. The illustration is based on a sketch made at the site and offers a rare visual account of British preparations on the eve of war.
